Action On Energy is funded through the Home Upgrade Grant 2 (HUG2) scheme. This government-backed scheme runs to March 2025 and it is designed to help low-income households to install low-carbon heating and make their homes more energy efficient.
These upgrades – commonly called ‘retrofitting’ – could help to reduce your energy bills and make your home easier to keep warm. Works can include fitting a more modern and efficient boiler, switching to an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) and installing insulation (including loft, cavity wall and cladding).
As one of the schemes approved contractors, MacBrookGas has been thoroughly checked to ensure we have the relevant expertise and qualifications to deliver home energy improvements.
You could be eligible for a HUG2 grant if you are an owner-occupiers or private renter and are living in a poor-performing, off-gas grid home in one of the following local authority areas:
-
Cambridge City Council
-
South Cambridgeshire District Council
-
Huntingdonshire District Council
-
East Cambridgeshire District Council
-
Fenland District Council

The ECO scheme is designed to encourage both tenants and homeowners considered to be in fuel poverty to install energy efficiency measures in their home. The ECO4 scheme was launched in 2022 and covers a four-year period until 31 March 2026.
The scheme works by placing a Home Heating Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO) on medium and large energy suppliers. Under HHCRO, obligated suppliers must promote measures that improve the ability of low-income, fuel-poor and vulnerable households to heat their homes. This includes actions that result in reduced energy usage, such as installing insulation or upgrading a heating system.
As one of the contractors participating in this scheme, MacBrookGas has been thoroughly checked to ensure we have the relevant expertise and qualifications to deliver home energy improvements.
ECO4 is a nationwide scheme and households can be deemed eligible if they receive at least one of the following benefits:
-
Child Benefit
-
Pension Guarantee Credit
-
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
-
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
-
Income Support
-
Tax Credits (Child Tax Credits and Working Tax Credits)
-
Universal Credit
-
Housing benefit
-
Pension credit saving credit
-
Local authorities are also able to refer residents in their areas to obligated energy suppliers so that they can be offered support under ECO Flex.
